Ghost Recon Wildlands – Last Rites
Tactical Shooter (AAA)
Last Rites is a free title update for Ghost Recon: Wildlands developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux for the 25th anniversary of the franchise. It was a very fast-paced production with technical challenges connected to the fact of working with 10-years-old versions of the engine (Anvil) and the localization tool (Oasis). The team had to investigate and retro-engineer the existing systems in order to build upon them.
Role: Narrative Designer, Writer
As a Narrative Designer and Writer, I was responsible with:
- Adapting the existing systemic dialogue system present in the main game to the narrative needs of the new campaign in the context of a very fast-paced production.
- Developing and maintaining documentation pertaining to the new hostile faction, Los Penitentes, defining characterization, goals and a specific vernacular for the NPCs.
- Writing all systemic dialogue lines for playable characters and NPCs (teammates, hostile faction members, VIPs)
- Writing codex entries exploring and expanding the world of Last Rites, deepening the backstories of the setting and its antagonist.
- Proofreading and rewriting all UI texts before implementing them in Oasis: tutorials, codex, menus, tactical map…
- Participating in voice recording sessions and using my actor direction background to contribute to the feedback and directions given to the actors.
- Communicating with Localization team and serving as a relay between them and Development team (putting exports and documents together, answer tool-related and translation-related questions…)
Florence’s mandate included rapid turnaround times and many technical constraints but even though they were new to the studio they were immediately creative, reliable and autonomous. They quickly became an asset, working well across disciplines to own their work and engendering a huge amount of trust from the team. They adapted to rapidly changing role requirements with aplomb and were never anything less than a force for positivity and progress. They’re also a damn fine writer. You know the words are good when the talent stops to compliment them in the booth.
I very much hope I will get to work with Flo again.
