Sensitivity Reading

À la fin, nous ferons histoire – Marine Peyrard

Éditions Fièr.es

Language: French
Role: Sensitivity reader.
I focused on the gender identity representation of non-binary character Lou, who is present throughout the novel. I made sure that no essential aspect of the character’s identity was overlooked and no stereotype included in the book unless addressed by the narration itself. I was also committed to have Lou’s thoughts and self-awareness match their age and where they were in their coming-in and then coming-out process.

I focused on the mental health issues featured in this book, especially Luna’s struggle with depression, suicidal thoughts and anxiety. One of the main challenges of this particular mission was making sure Alween’s stereotypical views on mental health issues, bordering on psychophobia at times, were clearly seen as the character’s point of view and didn’t reflect the book’s or author’s stance on the subject.

I corrected spelling and grammar mistakes, sequence of tenses, while also ensuring consistency in those of the author’s stylistic choices that impacted narration.
