Anno 117 – Pax Romana
Strategic city builder game (AAA)
Anno 117: Pax Romana is a game developed by Ubisoft Blue Bytes, published in November 2025 on PC, PS5 and Xbox. It was my first mission in the industry.
Role: Junior Game Writer
As a member of the Game Writing team, I was tasked with:
- Developing a diversity of non-playable characters (Traders, Rivals, and Population Tiers) reflecting the cosmopolitan aspect of the Roman Empire and the diversity of the exchanges, commercial or otherwise, between its numerous provinces.
- Writing voice-over lines, barks and murmurs for these characters, bringing a sense of liveliness and authenticity to the place, and establishing the variety of social status and daily preoccupations presented in the game, therefore creating a sense of a whole, complex society.
- Determining and implementing in the engine a number of player-facing terms, from the names of buildings & goods to infotips and fluff text.
- Maintain and complete documentation (world bible, glossary, character sheets, including gameplay aspects such as the goods offered by each Trader or Rival according to their backstory.)
- Writing texts for occasional choice quests (Governor Decisions) and implementing them.
- Historical research to feed writing and benefit other members of the team.
- Communication with Localization teams and feedback on their work.
Florence quickly adapted to the pace of work and to the text editing and development tools specific to our company. Although this was their first job in video game development, their speed of learning combined with their excellent level of English and their literary sensitivity allowed us to entrust them with tasks and their results proved to be first rate. Florence was able to find their place within the department, but also the studio, testifying to an undeniable team spirit. Their great autonomy and professionalism have given them the confidence of other employees and Florence has fully integrated into the team.
—Natacha Hentzien, Senior Narrative Designer at Ubisoft Mainz.
Florence was a professional colleague who was also friendly and reliable. I appreciated their presence in the team. I could trust that Florence would voice their opinions, ask questions, and provide helpful insights from their own expertise in meetings and daily collaborations. They were also very quick to adapt to our workflows and processes. During production, Florence reached out to me on many occasions to clarify topics, clear up misunderstandings or simply keep me up to date on their tasks’ updates. I had the impression that Florence was passionate; they cared about the project and took their work seriously. I’m confident and would highly recommend Florence for positions similar to their experience at Ubisoft Mainz.
—Toober Nguyen, Associate Producer at Ubisoft Mainz during the development of Anno 117.
Working with [Florence] was both inspiring and efficient. Their writing was very good with a nice flair to make stand out. They were also very responsive to implement the feedback they received.
—Nic Magnier, Senior Game Designer at Ubisoft Mainz.
